ORIGINS OF
AMBER
Baltic Amber, sometimes called "Gold of the North", is essentially hardened pine
resin or sap that once flowed naturally in the great coniferous "Amber Forests"
that long ago covered most of north-eastern Europe.
Over the course of the last 50 to 60 million years this resin, which has
collected in large deposits along the south and south-east coast of the Baltic
Sea in such countries as Russia, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, has
hardened to form raw Amber which when refined becomes the beautiful
'semi-precious' gemstone of modern times.
Today, it is mined, cut and polished like many other precious and semi-precious
minerals yet it remains distinct because of its organic origins.
Amber often contains inclusions such as insects, bits of prehistoric plant life,
etc. Small spherical 'sun spangles' are a common type of inclusion and are the
result of the expansion of trapped air bubbles or water droplets within the
Amber.
Although Amber is found in other parts of the world including the Dominican
Republic, Mexico, Turkey and Burma, Baltic Amber is considered amongst the most
valuable and is prized for its incredible variety of colors and interesting
inclusions. It comes from a species of pine tree that is now extinct. Some
experts consider this Amber the only true Amber. No two pieces of Baltic Amber
are alike. There are over 600 shades and colors alone.
THE USE OF AMBER AND
HEALING PROPERTIES
Since ancient Roman and Greek times, Amber has been used to treat various
ailments. Modern science has revealed that naturally occurring Amber discharges
negative ions which have a 'positive' beneficial effect on ones physical and
mental well-being. Over the centuries this gentle stone has been used to treat a
variety of illnesses including nervous disorders, circulatory problems,
rheumatism and asthma. Amber is also said to bring its wearer romantic love,
purification, wisdom, energy and balance. It also enhances patience, calmness,
and ancient knowledge.
